Box Score
Philadelphia – Drexel (4-3-0) and Iona played to a tie through 90 minutes of action but in the first minute of overtime the Gaels (6-1-2) found its golden goal off the foot of Giovanni Destasio off a free kick on the left side of the goal box to give his team a 2-1 victory. Senior Mike Crosse scored his third goal of the season for Drexel and freshman Tres Heffron got his first start in goal for the Dragons.
Iona edged Drexel in shots 14-10 after out-blasting the Dragons 10-6 in the first half. The Gaels earned five corner kick opportunities to the Dragons' two. Heffron made five stops in his first appearance for the Dragons in goal. Iona's Nils Binstock made four saves for his sixth win of the season.
Mike Crosse found the net for Drexel to open scoring in the 13th minute. Freshman defender Ben Miller sent the ball into the box to Crosse, who chipped it over the diving Iona keeper into the middle of the net for his third tally of the season, giving Drexel a 1-0 lead.
Iona nearly equalized just seconds later when Robbie Krohmer broke free in the Drexel goal box and beat a diving Tres Heffron. Krohmer took another touch and had a look at a wide open goal, but his shot clanked off the near post and rebounded to Drexel's defenders for a quick clear.
The Gaels eventually would get their match-tying goal in the 26th minute when Fernando Lissera drew a hard foul just over the midfield stripe. Lissera set up the free kick about 40 yards from the goal just to the right side of the field. He put the kick on goal and it bounced once before finding its way through a host of players who screened the sight line of Heffron and allowed the ball to find its way into the goal.
Iona produced the majority of scoring opportunities in the second half. Drexel's defenders dispatched the majority of them and a few fortuitous bounces also went in the Dragons' favor. The Gaels best chance came with 14 minutes remaining after a foul left the ball just outside the left corner of the goal box. The reset found its way to the right side of the goal where Alvaro Torecilla crossed it across the face of the goal, leaving Heffron to pounce on the ball and turn away the chance.
With four minutes left the Gaels' Mario Rios pushed a cross from the left side to the right of the goal. The feed narrowly missed the foot of a diving Torecilla as the match ticked into overtime.
Iona came out as the aggressor off in the extra period when the Gaels drew a foul just outside the goal box on what could have been a break-away attempt. The free kick, taken by Liserra went to the right side of the goal where Julian Grajales headed it toward the goal. As the ball bounced Destasio drilled it into the net for the match ender.
The Dragons closed out their non-conference slate with a 4-3-0 record and will take that mark into CAA play this weekend when they travel to play UNC Wilmington on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. match.
