
Men's Soccer Hosts Iona Tonight in Non-Conference Finale

Philadelphia - The Drexel Men's Soccer team will look to wrap up a successful non-conference campaign when the Dragons play host to the Iona Gaels at Vidas Field tonight. The 4:00 p.m. match is the final tune-up before Drexel opens its Colonial Athletic Association schedule on the road at UNC Wilmington this weekend. Parking and admission are free at the Vidas Athletic Complex (43rd and Powelton Ave.) tonight.
Teams: Drexel (4-2-0) vs. Iona (3-1-2)
Venue: Vidas Field, 43rd and Powelton Ave., Philadelphia, Pa.
All-Time Series: Series is tied 2-2-0
Last Meeting: Drexel fell in New Rochelle, N.Y to Iona 2-0 in the last meeting. At the time it was teh fourth consecutive loss for the Dragons. Despite playing with a one-man advantage for slightly more than 60 minutes, Drexel's 8-7 shots advantage wasn't enough to overcome Iona on the road. The Gaels received their goals from Aly Lo and Giovanni Destasio in the 19th and 83rd minutes respectively. Nate Baker had two quality shots on goal for Drexel; however, both were thwarted by Iona keeper Nils Binstock who recorded four saves and the shutout.
Entering the Match: Drexel traveled to University of Maryland-Baltimore County over the weekend where the Dragons dropped their first road match of the season by a score of 3-0. This was the first time the Dragons were held off the board this year. Levi Houapeu of UMBC scored all three goals for the Retrievers to give his team the victory at the final whistle. Houapeu wasted no time when in the ninth minute he followed up his own rebound off of the hands of Drexel keeper Tim Washam. Houapeu then scored again for the Retrievers in the 25th minute giving them the lead going into the half. Finally, in the 77th minute Houapeu rounded off his hat-trick when he finished a cross from teammate Andrew Bulls.
Drexel was outshot in the match 16-8. Redshirt freshman goalie Tim Washam made seven saves during the contest which was only his second start as a Dragon.
Players to Watch: Freshman striker Malcolm LeBourne scored twice in Drexel's 2-0 win over La Salle last Wednesday. The tallies were the rookie's first collegiate goals and helped springboard the Dragons to a share of this season's Philadelphia Soccer Six title. For his efforts, LeBoure was recognized as the CAA's Rookie of the Week and he als earned a spot on the Soccer Six weekly Honor Roll. LeBourne's goals were set up by feeds from senior midfielder Fabio Assumpcao, who leads the team with three goals and two assists on the season.
Iona senior forward Giovanni Destasio leads the Gaels in goals and points this season and will certainly be looking to continue his scoring on the road. In his last match, Destasio had both goals as the Gaels battled the Quinnipiac Bobcats to a 2-2 draw over the weekend in Hamden, Conn.
Up Next: Drexel will travel to the University of North Carolina-Wilmington to open up conference play for the season. The match is scheduled for Saturday Sept. 26 with kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
