Philadelphia – Drexel men's soccer returns to the friendly confines of Vidas Field Saturday afternoon to host conference power UNC Wilmington (5-3-0, 1-0). The Dragons (4-3-1, 0-1) will attempt to defend their unblemished record at home this season against a Seahawks team that was picked to defend its conference championship this season. The home side will hope to avail itself of a strong Drexel crowd on Alumni Day. Kick-off for the match is set for 3:00 p.m.
The Dragons return to conference play in earnest after a 2-1 loss to Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa. on Tuesday. Despite striking first with a crossbar rebound off the foot of Andrew Goldberg, finished by Anthony Bafile, the Dragons were unable to shut down the Bison attack. Bucknell scored late in the second half to send the match into overtime where they again found the net for the golden goal only 23 seconds into the second extra frame.
UNC Wilmington is also returning to CAA play after a non-conference loss to Coastal Carolina, 1-0. The Chanticleers scored early in the first half and held onto the advantage as CCU keeper Scott Angevine made four saves for the shut-out. The loss capped a three-game home stand that saw the Seahawks go 1-2 with a 4-0 shutout of Hofstra in their conference opener.
Drexel and UNC Wilmington met late in the season last year in a match that was originally scheduled as the CAA opener, but was postponed to late October due to rain. The Dragons suffered a 5-0 loss to the Seahawks in Wilmington, N.C. Etienne Boulinger scored twice for the Seahawks who held a 3-0 advantage heading into the break. Drexel outshot UNCW 9-8, but Seahawks' keeper Brock Duckworth was equal to the task denying all nine attempts. UNCW leads the all-time series 6-2. Drexel's last win over the Seahawks was a 1-0 shutout in Wilmington on Oct. 21, 2007.
On Saturday, Drexel men's soccer team also celebrates its annual alumni day before, during and after the match. There will be food, fun and games for all alumni and their families throughout the day. Registration for the Alumni Day events opens at 12:00 p.m. Parking and admission are free at Vidas Athletic Complex on 43rd and Powelton Ave.
