Box Score
Philadelphia - Freshman Mark Donohue broke a 1-1 tie in the 88th minute with his first career goal. The advantageous score gave Drexel a 2-1 win over Georgia State and helped the Dragons (7-5-1, 3-3) improve to 5-1 at home.
Donohue was the beneficiary of a misplay by Georgia State keeper Vincent Foermer who mistimed his leap on a bouncing ball 40 yards from the goal. The Drexel rookie collected the ball after Foermer's miss and walked it into the goal for the winning score in the 88th minute.
“I certainly think we stayed with the game despite going down, we did well to keep playing. We created a lot of chances in the first half but were unfortunate not to score,” Head Coach Doug Hess said. “I'm proud of the guys to earn three points playing under tough conditions today. The wind was definitely a factor as we saw on the final goal. But we'll take it and move on.”
Drexel dominated offensive play and possession on a windy day at Vidas Field. The Dragons outshot the Panthers 21-15 and forced Foermer to make nine saves in net.
Pentti Pussinen made eight stops in net for Drexel, including five in the first half to earn the victory.
Drexel maintained a consistent offensive flow in the first half which generated a number of scoring opportunities. One of the best chances came in the 15th minute when a build-up on the left side of the box produced a blast off the foot of Nathan Page from 15 yards out. Keeper Vincent Foermer dove to his right and deflected the ball into the air with a great deal of back spin, he then hustled to his feet to collect it before it could hit the ground again.
Georgia State put the first goal in the net off a corner kick with just over three minutes left. Alejandro Reyes cued in a corner kick to the far post. Evan Scott met it with a header falling away from the goal. Eric Lawrence connected with the centering ball and deposited it into the net on the near side to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Dragons countered almost immediately off the restart. Manuel Cazares carried the ball into the right side of the box and lifted a shot toward the middle that was stopped by the hand of a Georgia State defender. The hand-ball infraction resulted in a penalty kick, which was promptly deposited in the right side of the goal by Nathan Page to square the match at 1-1 in the 43rd minute.
In the second half with the wind at their backs, the Dragons continued to put the Panthers' defense under pressure. Ten minutes into the period Cazares collected an attempted clearance off a corner kick and chipped a ball over an outstretched Foermer that was one bounce away from finding its way into the net. Julian Eberhardt, one of Georgia State midfielders, cleared the ball off the line just before it got to the goal.
In the 69th minute the Dragons again came tantalizingly close to a goal when Andrew Goldberg nodded down a centering pass in the air from Malcolm LeBourne. Foermer batted it down then recovered the bounding ball to secure the save on the goal line.
Just three minutes later Cazares would find himself with an open look from 20 yards out with the ball on his left foot. His initial blast was saved by Foermer diving to his left. The deflection was blasted by LeBourne from the right side and also saved by the Georgia State keeper.
With just over 15 minutes left, Georgia State had its best scoring chance of the second half. Majluf Yasser got a look from the top of the goal box off a transition play. The redshirt freshman drilled a low liner to the center of the goal, but Pussinen was there to scoop up the save.
Pussinen dispatched another scoring chance with six minutes left when the Panthers fed a ball into the right side of the box. Jacob Hamilton slid to get a foot on the entry pass then directed it toward the goal while lying on the ground. Pussinen nearly grabbed it off his foot to stop the threat. That would be Georgia State's final opportunity as the Dragons went on to score the go-ahead goal and close out the victory.
Drexel returns to play on Wednesday, Oct. 16 when the Dragons travel to play at Hofstra.
