Boston, Mass. - Two goals in the final six minutes gave Northeastern a shocking 3-2 upset of No. 16 Drexel. The defeat snapped Drexel's record-tying nine game winning streak and handed the Dragons only their third loss in the progam's last 22 regular season conference games. It also marked the first time all season the Dragons failed to score three or more goals in a Colonial Athletic Association game.
Northeastern wasted little time as the Huskies scored just 1:05 into the contest as Carolyn Malloy one-timed an Allison Conti pass past Jenna Phillips for the game's opening score. Drexel responded less than seven minutes later when Monica Baick dribbled in the circle before sending a ball to Christina Mastropaolo who tied the game with a shot that rattled the back of the cage. The Dragons seized the lead when Susan Ciufo pounced on a rebound in front and send the ball across the goal line.
The Dragons maintained their 2-1 lead through halftime and appeared to be headed to a victory when the Huskies pulled their goalie with just over seven minutes remaining. The desperation move paid off when Annie Clayman found enough space fire a shot that beat Phillips with 5:17 remaining. Less than two minutes later, Northeastern was awarded a penalty stroke and the team's leading scorer, Crystal Poland, calmly slotted the ball into the cage to give the Huskies a big conference win.
For the game, Northeastern outshot Drexel, 16-13, and earned eight penalty corners to the Dragons' two. Both goalies made five saves on the day.
Drexel returns to action on Friday, Oct. 29 as the Dragons host Towson at 7:00 p.m. With wins in the final two games, the Dragons would clinch the regular season conference championship and would host the CAA Championships.
