Box Score
Philadelphia - Kim Tunell scored just over two minutes into overtime to help No. 17 Drexel turn away a Towson upset bid, 4-3. The win moved Drexel to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. With a win in their final game, the Dragons would clinch the top seed and host the CAA Championships.
Tunell wasted little time giving Drexel an early lead as she rocketed a penalty corner into the cage less than two minutes into the game. The Tigers fought back with a goal from Tabi Hatch at 16:11 and then took a brief lead as Hatch fed Katie DiFilippo who slotted the ball through the legs of Drexel's Jenna Phillips. Just 92 seconds later though, Christina Mastropaolo cleaned up after a Tunell shot on a penalty corner was stopped as Mastropaolo one-timed the ball into the cage after Megan Keller sent her a pass at the left post. The game remained tied until midway through the second half when Susan Ciufo was able to pounce on a loose ball and lifted a reverse shot into the netting to give Drexel a 3-2 lead. The Dragons appeared headed for the victory as they dominated possession in the second half while registering 15 shots to the Tigers' two in the period. But with 2:07 left in the game, DeFilippo drilled a shot from a tough angle on the right side of the circle that blazed past Phillips to knot the score at 3-3. While the game seemed up for grabs, just prior to the end of regulation two Towson players were assessed yellow cards on separate plays as Drexel began overtime with a two-person advantage as the Tigers were forced to play with five. Amanda Fleischut was able to earn the penalty corner that handed Tunell her golden opportunity and the senior delivered.
Drexel outshot Towson, 26-10, for the game and earned 11 penalty corners to the Tigers' four. Whitney Clugston stopped six shots for the Tigers while Phillips made three saves. Towson was shown three yellow cards for the game.
Drexel will look to cease the No. 1 seed in the CAA Championships on Sunday as the Dragons welcome rival Delaware for a noon showdown. Prior to the game, Drexel's seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
