Philadelphia - Drexel men's soccer will look to get back on track tonight as the Dragons return to Vidas Field for a 7:00 p.m. match against Northeastern (4-7-3, 2-3-3). The Dragons (7-7-1, 3-5) faltered in a pair of road matches at VCU and Hofstra last week, but will look to continue the form that has helped them post a 5-1 record at home this season. Fans can follow the game via live stats by clicking here.
Tonight's match-up is a meeting between the two teams locked in a tie for eighth place in the league with nine points apiece on the season. With the standings in a perpetual log-jam, just six points separating second through 12th place, and three matches left in the season, tonight's contest could be a crucial result for both teams if they wish to keep their hopes of a CAA Tournament berth alive.
The Dragons have gone without a goal in two straight matches after being shutout just twice previously on the season. During the goal drought the team has also been outshot 48-16. Keeper Pentti Pussinen turned in a nine-save performance in the team's 1-0 overtime loss at Hofstra and stopped four more in a 2-0 loss at VCU last Saturday. On the friendly home turf at the Vidas Athletic Complex, however, the Dragons are outscoring their opponents 15-4 on the season and 13-1 in the second half alone. Senior Anthony Bafile is just one assist shy of moving into a tie with All-American Ron Oskiera for seventh place among the program's all-time assist leaders.
Northeastern has also lost two straight coming into this evenings proceeding. The Huskies fell in shutout fashion, 1-0, against George Mason last weekend and also dropped a 2-1 match at Towson last week. Northeastern does have a scoreless draw with second-place UNC Wilmington to its credit this season. The Huskies' Michael Kennedy will likely be putting the Dragons' defense under pressure tonight. He leads the league in shots and shots per game and ranks seventh in goals in the CAA. Freshman Laurence Braude has tallied three goals and an assist in the last four games for the Huskies as he sits fourth on the team in points with seven.
Northeastern holds a slight edge in the all-time series against Drexel 8-6-2 and the Huskies won last season's meeting 4-0. Drexel's last win over Northeastern was a 2-1 OT victory in the 2008 season.
Parking and admission are free at Vidas Field on 43rd and Powelton Ave. in Philadelphia.
