Philadelphia - Drexel opened the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Championships in thrilling fashion as Kim Tunell drove a shot off a penalty corner into the back of the cage in overtime as the Dragons defeated VCU, 3-2, in a semifinal game. Despite facing an early 2-0 deficit, the top-seeded Drexel fought back with the next three goals to earn a spot in the CAA Championship Final on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Buckley Field. The Dragons will be looking for their first CAA Championship in program history.
Tunell rifled a shot off a penalty corner that rocked the back of the cage less than four minutes into the overtime session. The goal sent the Buckley Field crowd into a frenzy as Drexel escaped the upset bid by the upstart Rams. Drexel was able to send the game to overtime when the Dragons sent a penalty corner to the right post where Elizabeth Koch passed the ball near the left post where Megan Keller one-timed the ball into the goal. The score tied the game at 2-2 with just under 23 minutes remaining in regulation. It was the only goal by either team in the second half.
The first half saw the Rams jump out to an early lead. Just over six minutes into the game, Kelsey Scherrer was able to pick up a loose ball at the top of the circle and found enough space to dribble in and shoot past Drexel goalie Jenna Phillips into the left side of the cage. Ten minutes later, Phillips made a fantastic stick save on a VCU shot but Rachel Whitt pounced on the rebound and sent it across the goal line to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. Drexel got one goal back when Sofia Sanguinetti lifted a ball nearly the length of three-quarters of the field and over every field player in between. Susan Ciufo won the race to the ball and blasted a shot to found the netting on the breakaway.
Drexel outshot VCU, 13-12, while the Rams earned seven penalty corners to the Dragons' five in the evenly played contest. Phillips made two saves for Drexel while Erin Jablonski posted three saves.
