Box Score
Santa Barbara, Calif. - Drexel (2-4) opened play at the UCSB Gaucho Classic with a 4-2 win over the host University of California Santa Barbara (4-8). Hillary Allen earned her second win of the season in a complete-game effort. Paige Collings blasted her first home run of the season and freshman Hanna Parrish pushed her hitting streak to five consecutive games with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Drexel availed itself of four UCSB errors and knocked seven hits while putting runners on base in all but one inning. Allen's performance in the circle allowed the team's for-run offensive effort to hold up for the win. Allen allowed two earned runs on six hits and three walks through seven inning.
Collings, a First-Team All-CAA selection last season, gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo shot off starter Lindsey Correa. Correa would also go on to pitch a complete game. She allowed seven hits, did not walk a batter and struck out three and was charged with only two of the four runs she allowed.
The Gauchos squared the game in the bottom of the second on a home run by Lainey DePompa.
Drexel seemed poised for a big inning in top of the third as Hanna Parrish and Rachel Campbell both reached base to start the inning and Ashley Botelho was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. A grounder by Hillary Allen was mishandled by the shortstop, allowing the Dragons to push home one run and take a 2-1 lead. But a pair of pop outs by Katy Harrington and Laura Stagliano smothered any chance of putting a crooked number on the board in the frame.
Campbell came through with a bases-loaded RBI single to left field in the third inning to give the Dragons a 3-1 lead.
Brooke Putich got a run back for the Gauchos with a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth inning. The knock made it a 3-2 lead and breathed live in the UCSB. But the rally was quashed as quickly as it started when left fielder Kathy Harrington threw out Amanda Ziegler who was attempting to go from first to third on the single.
Drexel added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout by Laura Stagliano with the bases loaded and one out. An Ashley Botelho double helped stock the bases for the Dragons before Stagliano knocked a grounder to the right side, allowing pinch runner Amanda Bachmann to scamper home and make it a 4-2 game.
After the lead-off runner reached base on a fielding error by Botelho at first, Hillary Allen retired the next three Gauchos in order to earn her second win of the season.
The Dragons will next face 2009 NCAA Tournament qualifier North Dakota State at 4:30 on Thursday.
