Philadelphia - Fresh off a shutout victory over Georgetown on Tuesday, Drexel softball will welcome the Iona Gaels to Drexel Field for a Thursday twinbill starting at 2:00 today. The Dragons (5-6) are looking to build some momentum heading into their first conference weekend of the season. Iona (6-11) has lost six of its last eight games coming into today, including a 6-0 loss to Nevada at the Sacramento State Tournament in their last contest.
Drexel rode the pitching arm of Katrina Gaudier to a 4-0 victory over Georgetown on Tuesday. Rookie Amanda Bachmann recorded her first collegiate hit and drove in two of the Dragons' four runs. Senior Ashley Botelho inched closer to Dexel's all-time RBI mark by going 1-for-2 with a walk and knocking in one run. She is three RBIs from tying the record of 99 set by Kelli Griffith in 1993.
Today's doubleheader is the first meeting ever between Drexel and Iona. The Gaels are led offensively by the bat of Eileen McCann, who is hitting .372 with six homers and 17 RBIs in 14 games this season. In the pitching circle, the Gaels' top hurler is Sarah Jackson. She is 3-3 with a 3.70 ERA in seven starts this season and has held opponents to a .214 batting average. The rest of the staff is 3-8 with a 5.19 ERA.
The games will be played a Drexel Field, located in the northwest corner of the Vidas Athletic Complex at 43rd and Powelton Streets in Philadelphia. Opening pitch for game one is set for 2:00 p.m. Admission and parking for the game are free for all fans.
