Philadelphia - Riding high after a doubleheader split against Iona that featured an extra-inning loss and a run-rule victory that included two grand slams, Drexel (6-7) will begin CAA play this weekend against Towson. The Tigers (15-7) were tabbed to finish first in the conference by the preseason coaches poll and feature one of the top pitching staffs in the league this year.
Jenn Reading and Kelly Downes both hit grand slams in Drexel's 10-2 five-inning win over Iona on Thursday. Downes shot was the second homer of her career, while Readings was her second career hit with the first also being a homer. Junior pitcher Ellen Boundy threw five solid innings and struck out a season-high six batters.
Towson opened the season on a tear, going 13-2 out of the gate. But the Tigers have lost four of their last eight games entering this weekend's three-game series. Rookie hurler Katie Lingmai anchors a Towson pitching rotation that boasts a 2.02 ERA on the season. Lingmai is 5-2 with an 0.82 ERA, the stingiest in the CAA. All-CAA sluggers Stef Streets and Mindy Bean are second and third in the conference in RBIs, respectively. Sophomore catcher Courtney Wittner is having an excellent campaign thus far and is currently leading the team in batting with a .357 average.
Drexel is 27-44-1 against Towson all-time and the Dragons lost two of three to the Tigers last season in the final games of the year. Opening pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon at Drexel Field. Admission and parking are free for both contests at the Vidas Athletic Complex on 43rd and Powelton Streets.
