Downes' Clutch Hit Gives Dragons Series Victory Over Mason

Philadelphia – Kelly Downes hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Drexel a 3-2 win over George Mason (14-19, 4-8) and the series victory over the Patriots. Hillary Allen got the complete-game victory for Drexel as the Dragons improve to 15-17 on the season and 5-7 in conference play.
With the game tied, 2-2 in the bottom of the eight with two outs, Drexel's Kelly Downes hit a line drive up the center past Patriots pitcher Miranda Cranford driving in Amanda Bachmann,.
Allen allowed two earned runs in eight innings on six hits and two walks and struck out four batters to pick up her ninth win of the season. Ashley Botelho and Rachel Campbell both had two hits in the game to help Drexel come from behind in deciding game of the three-game series.
Mason took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Rachael Davies RBI single. The Patriots would load the bases with one out in the inning and had the chance to break the game open early. But Allen slammed the door with a pair of strikeouts to get her team out of the inning.
Drexel evened the game an inning later when Jenn Reading singled and pinch runner Laura Stagliano stole two bases and came in to score from third base on a wild pitch by starter Becky Anderson.
Emliy Lafferty hit her second homer ove the weekend to put the Patriots back on top 2-1 in the third inning.
Campbell set up the game-tying run in the sixth inning when she led off with a double to left field. A ground out by Bachmann moved her to third where Hanna Parrish brought her home with a grounder to second base.
Allen retired the Patriots in order in the top of the eighth inning to give the Dragons a chance to win it in the bottom of the frame.
The game-winning run developed from a lead-off single by Campbell. Bachmann appeared to ground into a fielder's choice at second base, but a throwing error by the second baseman allowed her to advance to second. Parrish moved her to third with a ground out to set up Downes' big single.
The win completes a nine-game homestand for the Dragons who will play at University City rival Penn on Wednesday, April 21.
