Philadelphia - Drexel softball will continue their non-conference tour of Philadelphia this week with a short trip down 33rd street for a twinbill against University City neighbor Penn at 3:00 p.m. today. The Dragons (15-17, 5-7) went 3-3 last week including picking up their second straight CAA series victory in a three-game weekend series against Georgia State. The Quakers are 13-18 on the season and have lost four of their last five games coming into today.
Over the weekend Drexel took two of three against George Mason to pull into a three-way tie for fourth place in the CAA standings. Kelly Downes came up with her second game-winning hit in as many weekends when she drove an RBI single to centerfield to give Drexel a 3-2 win over the Patriots in the eighth inning. Hillary Allen got the complete-game win, which was her second of the series and ninth of the season.
Paige Collings and Ashley Botelho have had the hot bats for Drexel of late. The Dragons third and fourth hitters in the lineup, respectively, combined to go 14-for-38 last week with three homers, three doubles and a triple while driving in five of Drexel's 11 runs on the week. Botelho is sizing up Drexel's career hits record this week. She is just 10 knocks away from the mark of 196 hits set by Kelli Griffith in 1993.
The Quakers are coming off a 3-1 series loss to Cornell over the weekend in Ivy League play. Penn is led by the bat of Alisha Prystowski, who is hitting .341 on the season with four homers, 11 doubles and 20 RBIs. Penn has mainly used a rotation of three pitchers this season. Taylor Tieman leads the team with six wins and 26 strikeouts. Chelsea Ott is 4-6 with the team's best ERA, 3.31 in 74 innings from the circle. Opponents are batting better than .300 against each of Penn's starters this season.
Drexel is 35-8 all-time against their crosstown rival and the Dragons have won five straight against Penn dating back to April 23, 2008. Paige Collings, Devon Metcalf and Sandi Wambold homered for the Dragons in their pair of wins against the Quakers last season. Hillary Allen earned her 10th pitching victory of the season in game two.
