Dragons Come Up Short Against Georgia State, 3-0 in Series Opener

Philadelphia – Hillary Allen pitched well but the Dragons (8-11, 1-3) seventh-inning rally fell short in a 3-0 victory for Georgia State (22-11, 3-1) in the series opener.
Georgia State got to Drexel starter Hillary Allen in the third inning after loading the bases with two outs. Lauren Cunningham and Rebecca Roles placed RBI singles to the left side of the infield giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
The Dragons had a chance to equalize in the fifth inning with runners on second and third and two outs. But pinch-hitter Katy Harrington grounded out to second base to end the inning.
A sacrifice fly by Danielle Roddy in the bottom of the sixth gave Georgia State an insurance run heading into the final frame.
Kelly Downes led off the seventh inning with a double to centerfield. Pinch runner Laura Stagliano took third on a past ball and Hillary Allen drew a walk. But Devon Metcalf fouled out to first base for the first out of the inning and Amanda Bachmann followed with a game-ending double play grounder.
Allen pitched well dispite taking the loss. She worked six innings and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out two batters.
Alana Thomas got the win for Georgia State after throwing five innings of shutout ball. McCall Langford recorded her third save of the season, allowing one hit and a walk in two innings.
The teams will be back in action for a doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
