Philadelphia - Drexel softball will renew its rivalry with Delaware this weekend in a crucial three-game CAA series. The Dragons (17-17, 5-7) have won their last two conference series, against UNC Wilmington and George Mason, while the Blue Hens (17-23-1, 5-7) have claimed series aginst Georgia State and UNC Wilmington coming into the weekend. The match-up not only pits age-old regional rivals against each other, but it is also a meeting between two of the three teams currently tied for fourth place in the CAA standings. Saturday's doubleheader is set for a noon pitch in Newark, Del. and the final game of the series is slated for noon on Sunday.
Drexel has playing some of its best softball of the season over the past couple weeks. The Dragons went 3-3 last week and claimed their second straight conference series, 2-1 over George Mason, and this past Wednesday they swept city rival Penn in a twinbill.
The Dragons' resurgent offense has been one of the keys to its success. At the heart of the offense is senior Ashley Botelho and sophomore Paige Collings. Both Dragons are hitting better than .400 since April 10 and they have combined to drive in 16 of Drexel's 31 runs during that span. Collings wowed fans on Wednesday with a towering shot that cleared the Quakers' scoreboard in left field and was last seen headed toward Route 76. Botelho has been Drexel's steadiest hitter this season and she is nearing a number of the program's all-time records as the season winds down.
From the pitching circle, Hillary Allen looked sharp against the Quakers on Wednesday. She threw a complete-game shutout and allowed just three hits in a dominant performance. Allen got the win in both games of Drexel's series against George Mason last weekend and she is now 10-7 on the season.
The Blue Hens are riding the hot bat of freshman phenom Jenny Richards this season. Richards is hitting .357 on the season and leading the team in doubles. Michelle Grap supplies the power in Delaware's lineup. Grap is leading the league with 12 home runs on the season. Shanette White is Grap's protection in the lineup. White is second on the team in hitting with a .325 average, four home runs and 20 RBIs.
On the rubber, Amanda Stacevicz is the reigning CAA Pitcher of the Week. She is 9-11 on the season with a 3.30 ERA. Stacevicz shut down UNC Wilmington in a complete-game three-hitter and posted a career-high 12 strikeouts. She also earned her first career save in the series. Opponents are hitting .266 against her this season.
Delaware holds a slight edge in the all-time series, one of Drexel's longest contested rivalries. The Blue Hens lead 34-31-1 all-time. Drexel has lost four of five to the Hens including getting swept in a rain-shortened two-game series last year.
