Philadelphia - Coming off a 4-1 week capped by a thrilling road win at Delaware, the Drexel softball team will close out its non-conference schedule with a single game at Villanova on Thursday. The Dragons (19-18) are 4-3 on the season against teams from Philadelphia, with the Wildcats (18-27) being the final team on Drexel's city docket.
The Dragons are 3-2 over the last two weeks in non-conference play with a sweep of Penn, a split against La Salle and a single-game loss to Saint Joseph's. Drexel also split with Temple earlier in the season as the Dragons took on all city challengers this year.
Led by the sizzling bat of Paige Collings, Drexel closed out its third straight conference series victory with two wins at Delaware last weekend. Collings went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run in Drexel's series-clinching 5-4 win over the Hens on Sunday. Collings was named CAA Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the first Dragon to earn the distinction this season. She hit .455 on the week with eight RBIs and two home runs.
The Wildcats have lost 5-of-7 entering Thursday's contest, including a sweep against Big East foe South Florida. Villanova's main offensive threat is Jess O'Boyle, who is hitting .341 on the season with seven home runs and 20 RBIs. Molly Manning is leading the team with 23 RBIs and is also the team's primary starting pitcher. Manning is 11-10 on the season with a 2.83 ERA. She has 120 strikeouts in 141 innings and opponents are hitting .271 against her.
Villanova leads the all-time series against Drexel 28-17. The last time the teams met was in 2006 when the Wildcats swept a doubleheader against the Dragons on the Main Line. Drexel's last win over Villanova was a 1-0 shutout on April 5, 2005 at home.
Opening pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Villanova's softball field. Fans can also follow the game live on GameTracker by clicking here.
