Philadelphia - Drexel Softball will take the field in its final home series of the season this weekend when the James Madison Dukes come to town with a CAA Tournament berth hanging in the balance. The Dragons (19-19, 7-8) have won three straight conference series and hold a one-game led over the Dukes and the Delaware Blue Hens for fourth place in the CAA. James Madison (18-30, 6-9) is coming off a 2-1 series loss against Towson last weekend. Saturday is Family Day at Drexel Field and Sunday, the Dragons' final home game of the season, is Senior Day.
Led by the hot bats of Ashley Botelho, Kelly Downes and reigning CAA Player of the Week Paige Collings, the Dragons have won their last three conference series against UNC Wilmington, George Mason and Delaware. This marks the first time since Drexel joined the CAA in 2002 that the Dragons have won three consecutive series.
Collings, who is leading the Dragons in home runs and RBIs on the season, has hit .469 and slugged .844 over the team's last nine conference games. Downes, is hitting .345 during that span with two game-winning hits. Botelho, who is currently leading the CAA in batting, has it .369 during the team's spurt of success over the last three weekends.
On the pitching rubber, Hillary Allen and Katrina Gaudier have been the Dragons' one-two punch all season. Allen is 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA in her last six CAA starts. Gaudier is 2-1 in that stretch and she is holding opponents to a .237 batting average over her last three conference starts.
The Dukes enter this weekend losers of their last three conference series against Hofstra, Georgia State and, most recently, Towson. James Madison dropped two of three at home to the Tigers last week, including a 9-0 no-hit loss on Sunday.
Jasmine Butler is the Dukes' leading hitter with a .323 average and she as successfully stolen 15 bases on 17 attempts. Katie Spitzer and Ashley Burhnam supply the power in James Madison's lineup, both sluggers have eight home runs on the season. James Madison is third in the CAA in home runs and fourth in runs scored and RBIs and they lead the conference with 56 stolen bases.
Cara Stecher is the Dukes' top pitcher with a 9-13 record and a 3.76. Olivia McPherson has been their most effective pitcher of late, however. She shut down Towson in game two last Saturday, allowing one run on three hits and striking out six.
James Madison leads the all-time series against Drexel 20-6 and the Dukes have won all but one conference series against Drexel since 2002. The last time the Dragons took two of three against James Madison on a conference weekend was in 2005, which was also the last time Drexel qualified for the CAA Tournament.
The Dragons will welcome friends and family to the game during Saturday's Family Day festivities. On Sunday seniors Ashley Botelho, Katrina Gaudier and Carla Waldron will be honored prior to the game on Senior Day. Parking and admission are free at Drexel Field which is located in the northwest corner of the Vidas Athletic Complex on 43rd and Powelton Ave.
