Philadelphia – James Madison ended Drexel's run of CAA series victories by handing the Dragons a 7-2 defeat to clinch the series 2-1 on Sunday. Laura Stagliano went 2-for-3 at the plate, stole two bases and scored both runs for the Dragons (20-21, 8-10). Katie Spitzer was 3-for-4 for the Dukes with a home run and Katie Burhnam also had three hits for James Madison (20-31, 8-10).
James Madison scored runs in each of the first three innings and held a 7-0 lead after three frames. The Dragons did their best to come back, but in the end Drexel stranded 10 runners on base and would scratch out only two runs in the loss.
Katrina Gaudier took the ball for Drexel on her Senior Day and pitched her way into and out of trouble in the first inning. James Madison scored runs on an RBI groundout by Shannon Moxey and a single by Katie Spitzer before the Dragons escaped the inning trailing 2-0.
Drexel's response was cut short in the bottom of the frame when, with runners on first and third and one out, Ashley Botelho grounded to shortstop. Ashley Burnham made the play at first as Amanda Bachmann broke from third toward home. The throw to the plate from Shannon Moxey was in time to get the double play and end the inning.
An error by Kelly Downes with runners on second and third allowed two more Dukes to scored, building a 4-0 lead for the visitors. The defense picked up their teammate to get out of the inning without further damage. Katy Harrington, who had just entered the game, came up with a sliding catch in left field and Caprice DeMirjian ended the inning by scooping up a line drive and tagging the runner between second and third for a double play.
The speed of Laura Stagliano allowed the Dragons to swipe a run in the bottom of the second. Stagliano beat out an infield single blooped over the head of the third baseman. She stole second and took third on a past ball before scampering home on a wild pitch to make it a 4-1 game.
A two-run shot from Katie Spitzer curled around the foul pole in left field put James Madison on top 6-1 in the third inning and chased Katrina Gaudier in favor of Hillary Allen. The Dukes added another run when Caprice DeMirjian bounced a throw to Ashley Botelho at first base with two outs. Botelho did well to block the ball and keep it in front of her, but the carom skidded away from her allowing Jasmine Butler to round third and score on the play.
A James Madison double play broke up another Drexel rally in the third inning after the first two batters of the inning reached base. Katy Harrington grounded back to the pitcher who threw the ball to third base for a force out before Haley Johnson relayed the ball back to first to complete the double play.
Stagliano was in the middle of another scoring chance in fourth inning when, with two outs she reached first after being hit by a pitch. She stoles second and took third on a wild pitch. Starter Olivia McPherson then walked the bases loaded for Devon Metcalf. The third baseman hit a nubber to shortstop. Ashley Burnham's throw was low but Shannon Moxey scooped it out of the dirt in time to get Metcalf.
In the sixth inning, Stagliano reached again on an infield singled bounced to third. DeMirjian reached on a fielding error by Caitlen Manning at second base and both runners advanced when Manning threw the ball away. Rachel Campbell drew a walk to load the bases with no outs for Devon Metcalf. Metcalf struckout swinging and Bachmann followed with an RBI groundout to third base to make it a 7-2 game.
Gaudier took the loss for Drexel, falling to 4-7 on the season. She allowed six runs, three of them earned, on seven hits in two innings of work. Hillary Allen gave up one unearned run on four hits and a walk through five innings to give her team a chance to come from behind.
Cara Stecher got the win in relief of Olivia McPherson. Stecher allowed one run on two hits and three walks through three and one-third innings on the rubber. McPherson went two and two-thirds to start the game, allowing one run on four hits and three walks while striking out two batters.
The Dragons finish up the 2010 regular season next weekend when they travel to play at Hofstra.
