Philadelphia - The 11th-ranked Drexel field hockey team will host Saint Joseph's under the lights of Buckley Field on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Dragons have won their last 10 games against Philadelphia-area opponents and their last 15 against Pennsylvania schools. The team's last defeat at the hands of a Philadelphia school came on Sept. 19, 2007 when Temple outlasted Drexel 2-1 in double overtime. In the teams' 2009 meeting against the Hawks, Drexel picked up one of the most lopsided victories in program history as the Dragons outshot Saint Joseph's 27-1 en route to an 8-0 victory. Susan Ciufo and Christina Mastropaolo each scored a pair of goals while Mariel Marinelli and Brittney Hausman recorded first career collegiate goals.
Drexel enters the game with an 0-1 record after falling at the hands of No. 2 Maryland on Friday night, 4-2. Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year Christina Mastropaolo scored with just over four minutes remaining to bring Drexel to within 3-2 to No. 2 Maryland but the Terrapins were able to hold off the Dragons and claim a 4-2 victory after holding a 3-0 halftime advantage. Joining Mastropaolo on the CAA's Preseason All-Conference team are fellow seniors Susan Ciufo and Kim Tunell along with sophomore goalie Jenna Phillips. Drexel, picked to win the CAA in a vote by the league's coaches, have four of the league's 11 players on the preseason squad.
After a season-opening loss to No. 3 Virginia, the Hawks rebounded to defeat Bucknell, 7-3. Nicole McCreight tied a school record with four goals on the day while Casey Fry added a pair of goals. The game was tied with 31 minutes remaining but the Hawks' offense exploded for five goals over that span to cruise to victory. Kelly Swanick made seven saves to earn her first victory of the season in the cage.
