Box Score
Philadelphia – Drexel (1-0) scored all five of its goals in the second half of a 5-0 rout of Canisius (0-1) that gave first-year Head Coach Doug Hess a win in his premiere with the team. Brandon Zeller, Malcolm LeBourne, Nathan Page, Anthony Bafile and Andrew Goldberg all tallied in the season-opening victory. Sophomore keeper Tim Washam made six stops for his first shutout of the season.
The goal that started the windfall for Drexel occurred just over 10 minutes into the second half. Andrew Goldberg led a break on from the left side of the field that resulted in a pair of timed dives at his cross in front of the net and an eventual Drexel.
The Griffins' defensive breakdown would foreshadow the Dragons' first goal of the match just two minutes later. Malcolm LeBourne dodged his way through the right side of Canisius' defense and released a cross 10 yards outside the goal box. His delivery sped its way across the goal mouth where a diving Brandon Zeller deposited it in the net.
Six minutes later LeBourne himself would reap the benefits of a patient offensive build up by the Dragons. Manny Cazares possessed the ball in the box and pushed a pass across to the left side. The pass was nearly intercepted, but the ball squirted free allowing LeBourne to step into his strike and curl it into the upper left corner of the goal.
Just over two minutes after LeBourne's strike, with Canisius' defense still regrouping, Nathan Page dribbled his way through a pair of defenders on the right side before beating the keeper to the left from 12 yards out to put Drexel on top 3-0.
With the game well in hand for the Dragons and just under seven minutes on the clock, Drexel was awarded an indirect free kick in the goal box after a dangerous play foul by the Griffins. With the ball positioned 12 yards from the goal mouth on the right side, Andrew Stolle pushed it to the left where Anthony Bafile met it with a boot to the left side of the net, giving Drexel a commanding 4-0 lead.
Goldberg closed out scoring in the 88th minute when a pass from Nate Baker just over midfield sprung him for a break-away chance. Goldberg chested down the pass and dribbled toward the keeper. As substitute goalie Luke Seymour dove to take the ball off his foot, the sophomore striker lifted it to the left, then sprinted over to the post to finish off his strike and salt away Doug Hess' first Drexel coaching victory.
The teams toiled to a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes with Canisius holding a slight edge over the Dragons in offensive chances. The Griffins earned five corner kicks to the Dragons' two. Drexel was able to dispatch all five corner attempts, with the Griffins' best scoring chance coming off a corner kick with just over four minutes to play in the period.
Sam Zarka cued the ball in to play and Drexel keeper Tim Washam leapt to catch the cross, but came up short. Fortunately for the Dragons, a defender stationed on the far post was able to knock astray a would-be scoring chance.
Drexel's midfield did well to control the match in the second half, resulting in the slew of scoring chances and goals. Drexel outshot Canisius 13-5 in the second period and 18-14 in the match. Canisius outcornered the Dragons 8-4, but failed to convert any into a score. Starting keeper Kareem Gray made five stops in net and allowed four of the five Drexel goals.
The Dragons return to Vidas Field this Saturday, Sept. 4 to host Soccer Six rival Villanova in a 3:00 p.m. match.
Canisius 0 0 - 0
