Philadelphia - Junior Andrew Goldberg scored a goal in each half to give Drexel a 2-0 win over the Villanova Wildcats in Soccer Six Play. Rookie keeper Pennti Pussinen got the shutout in goal with the help of a solid performance by the Dragons' defense. Drexel is 2-0 on the season while the Wildcats drop to 1-1.
"I thought we did a solid job of containing a good attacking team today," Drexel Head Coach Doug Hess said. "And we did a great job of sustaining possession with purpose ourselves."
The Dragons outshot Villanova 7-2 in the first 45 minutes and 12-7 in the match. Villanova earned five corner kicks to Drexel's one, but failed to convert on any of them.
Following a half in which the Dragons dominated possession and scoring chances, the Dragons finally broke through with three seconds remaining before halftime. A Villanova foul at midfield allowed Drexel to set up a free kick from 50 yards out and about 10 yards off the sideline. Ben Miller launched the kick toward the left side of the box where defender Tal Bublil corralled the deflected ball and directed it toward the goal mouth. Andrew Goldberg met the deflection with his foot just in time to slide it past keeper Chris Bresnahan and the Wildcat defense to give Drexel a 1-0 lead.
Coming out of the half, Drexel kept the Wildcats under pressure. Nate Baker threaded a pass from the right side of the goal box to Anthony Bafile on the left. Bafile's shot missed just wide going back to the right side after being deflected by a diving Chris Bresnahan.
In his first start in net, freshman keeper Pentti Pussinen earned his shutout when he positioned himself well on a blast from 12 yards out off the foot of Kyle Soroka in the 59th minute. That stop was his lone save in the game, as Drexel's defense did well to disrupt most of Villanova's possessions.
Malcolm LeBourne set up another scoring opportunity for the Dragons in the 65th minute when he drew a foul five yards outside of the goal box on the right. On the ensuing free kick, Bafile curled the ball on goal, but it was saved by Bresnahan in the middle of the frame.
Goldberg delivered Drexel's second goal in the 71st minute when he poached a pass back by one of the Villanova defenders intended for the 'Cats' keeper, the beat the goalie on the right side for a goal from 15 yards out to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
Drexel's defense took over from that juncture, containing the Wildcats and preventing any further scoring opportunities.
Bresnahan made three saves for Villanova in the loss.
The Dragons return to the field next Saturday, Sept. 11 when they travel to play fellow Soccer Seven rival Temple with the league championship hanging in the balance.
