Philadelphia - Drexel men's soccer travels to play city rival Temple this Saturday with a chance to make Philadelphia Soccer Six history. If the Dragons defeat the Owls in the 2:00 p.m. tilt, Drexel will share the 2010 Soccer Six title with Penn, and successfully defend their 2009 league championship, a feat that has not been accomplished since the Dragons did it in 2002-03. The showdown will take place at Temple's Ambler Sports Complex in Ambler, Pa.
The Dragons opened their 2010 campaign with a pair of wins last week over Canisius (5-0) and Villanova (2-0). The twin shutout victories were enough to vault Drexel into a No. 6 regional ranking by the NSCAA in the latest coaches poll.
Temple begins their Philly Soccer Six play after suffering a tight 0-1 loss to Lafayette in the closing match of the Puma Classic last weekend. Lafayette made good on a penalty kick in the 26th minute after Owl's junior Cody Calafiore was whistled for an infraction in the box. Temple has been held scoreless in both its matches this season but junior forward Tyler Witmer leads the Owl's in shots this year with four as he looks to soon capitalize.
All-time series: Temple leads the all-time series with Drexel 26-13-4 and has won the teams' last two meetings. Drexel's last win over Temple was on Sept. 1, 2001, a 2-0 shutout at home.
Last meeting: The teams' last meeting was on September 14, 2005, a 2-0 Temple win. The Owls struck early with a 12th minute goal from the work of Tony Donatelli as he eluded Drexel's defense and found the back of the net. Donatelli helped to cap the half when he found Ryan Heins for another tally. Drexel freshman Andy Schneider scored the lone goal, his first collegiate mark, for the Dragons in the second half but Temple's early lead proved too much. Nick Macri stopped three in net for the Dragons while his counterpart Bryant Hosler turned away four.
Players to watch: Drexel's Andrew Goldberg is coming off a three-goal week that earned him CAA Co-Player of the Week honors. The junior striker capped Drexel's five-goal win over Canisius with a tally in the 88th minute. He also scored both of the Dragons' goals in a 2-0 Soccer Six win against Villanova last Saturday.
Temple's senior keeper Bret Mollon has allowed just one goal in 180 minutes this season. Mollon was the top keeper in goals-against average (1.04) and shutouts (6) in the city last year.
