Box Score
Philadelphia - Junior Ashley Santee scored twice as Drexel extended its winning streak against Philadelphia opponents with a 3-1 victory at Temple. Jen Cairone scored a goal and added an assist while fellow seniors Christina Mastropaolo and Megan Keller also added assists. The win moved Drexel to 4-3 on the season while Temple had its record evened at 4-4.
Temple opened the scoring 13 minutes into the game as Bridget Settles scored her fifth goal of the season as she ripped a shot from the right side of the circle. The Dragons evened it up as Santee was able to deflect a Cairone shot in front just over six minutes after the Owls' score to send the game tied at 1-1 at halftime. The Owls had a great opportunity before the halftime whistle as Settles dribbled around a charging Jenna Phillips and fired a shot that was stopped by Sofia Sanguinetti for a defensive save. The half was evenly played not only on the scoreboard but on the stat sheet as both teams fired five shots while Temple earned the only penalty corner of the period.
The second half saw Drexel break away as the Dragons fired 10 shots in the frame with Cairone's tally breaking the tie. Kim Tunell dribbled the ball down the left side of the field and near the end line before crossing the ball through the circle. Mastropaolo deflected the ball to Cairone who fired a shot from point blank range that found the back of the cage. Santee iced the game as she deflected a Megan Keller shot off a penalty corner high into the back of the net.
Drexel outshot the Owls, 15-10, for the game and held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners. Phillips made five saves for the Drexel while Sarah Dalrymple stopped eight shots.
Drexel opens Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday as the Dragons host Hofstra at Buckley Field at 4:00 p.m.
