Men's and Women's Squash Prep for Inaugural Matches

PHILADELPHIA – After months of buildup, the time has come to start a program. The Drexel men's and women's squash teams will play their first ever matches at the varsity level this week, as the women visit Haverford on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. and the men do the same on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
Drexel has built an impressive foundation for its varsity program, which will bring the school's varsity team count to 18. The Dragons brought in John White as the team's first head coach. White, who earned a reputation as one of the top young coaches in the game during a four-year term as the head coach at Franklin & Marshall, has an impeccable resume within the squash world. He was ranked No. 1 in the world in March, 2004 and remains one of the top 10 players nationally. A fan favorite as a player, White set a world record with a serve of 172 miles per hour.
White's teams are comprised largely of former Drexel club players. Many of them are international student-athletes, but a sizeable portion also hails from the local Philadelphia area, one of the biggest hotbeds of squash in the United States.
Before long, those teams will boast state-of-the-art facilities in which to play at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. As Drexel played host to the 2011 Delaware Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships, plans were unveiled for renovated squash facilities for the new varsity programs. They will feature five playing courts, a team room and comfortable seating areas, and will be located in the lower level of the DAC. The Dragons are slated to play their first matches in the new facilities in February.
The Haverford matches will be the first of six for the women and eight for the men before the end of November. Both teams will play round robins at Navy in Annapolis, Md. next week, and will conclude the fall portion of their schedules on November 30 at nearby Penn.
