No. 3 Maryland Tops Drexel Field Hockey, 6-2

College Park, Md. – No. 3 Maryland defeated Drexel, 6-2, in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at the Terrapins' Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins outshout Drexel, 25-11, and had 11 penalty corners to the Dragons' two. The loss dropped Drexel 10-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Maryland got on the board just over six minutes into the contest on a goal by Katie Gerzabek. Harriet Tribble directed the ball towards Gerzabek who tipped in the ball in from the left post for the lead, 1-0. At 20:14, Maryland's Megan Frazer carried the ball into the circle and unleashed a shot from the top of the circle to give the Terrapins a two-goal lead, 2-0. Gerzabek scored her second goal to put Maryland ahead by three, 3-0, at half.
The Terrapins opened up the second half with quick two goals. With just under 15 minutes remaining in the game, Drexel's Alexandra Atiyeh dished the ball to Elise DiDonato who struck the ball past the Terrapins' Melissa Vassalotti. DiDonato closed the gap to four, 5-1. Drexel gained momentum and continued to put pressure on Maryland's defense. Freshman Meghan Plank tipped the ball into the back of the cage from teammate Margaux Lourtie's pass. Drexel was down by three, 5-2, but Maryland's Lindsey Puckett secured the lead, 6-2, as the game clock game to an end.
Senior Kim Chiarelli tied her career high with nine saves. She now has 53 on the season. Maryland's Melissa Vassalotti made five stops for the win.
The Dragons host Northeastern and Hofstra at Buckley Field this weekend for the final two regular season contests.
