Buies Creek, N.C. - The Dragons (0-2) pushed their first runs of the season across the plate in mounting a 6-2 lead on the host Campbell Camels (1-0) through three innings, but they saw that lead slip away in a seven-run fourth inning fraught with errors. Paige Collings and Katy Harrington both drove in a pair of runs for the Dragons and rookie Comfort Ahonkhai went 2-for-4 with her first career hits. Drexel faces Virginia at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
Collings gave her team a 2-0 lead with a two-RBI triple in the first inning. She came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Katy Harrington to make it a 3-0 game before the home Camels came to the plate.
Freshman Shelby Taylor took the ball for the Dragons in their second game at the Hampton Inn Tournament. The rookie hurler fanned the first batter she faced before yeilding a solo home run to the Camels' number three hitter. Casey Melton.
Drexel put their first two batters on base in the second inning and used a sacrifice to push them to second and third with one out. Hanna Parrish and Laura Stagliano could not push home either runner, popping out and striking out to end the inning.
Taylor walked the lead-off batter to open the bottom of the second, and allowed the runner to reach second on a sacrifice bunt. She quickly atoned for the walk by striking out two batters to end the inning.
Harrington and Collings helped the Dragons tack on three more runs in the bottom of the third. Collings doubled and Harrington singled her home. Kelly Downes drew a walk which signaled the end for Campbell's starter. The reliever promptly surrendered two more runs on a pair of passed balls, giving the Dragons a 6-1 lead.
A pair of Drexel throwing errors in the third inning allowed Forgacs to come around and score after leading off the inning with a single. Rachel Campbell got the Dragons out of the inning by doubling Melton off first base on a fly ball to right field.
The Camels broke open the game in the fourth inning by scoring seven runs, four of them unearned, on six hits. Campbell sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning. Seven batters got to the plate before the Dragons were able to record an out, aided by a fielding error by Ahonkhai in left field. The offensive explosion put Campbell on top 9-6.
Amanda Bachmann singled home a run for Drexel in the sixth inning with runners on second and third. But the rally stalled out on a fielder's choice by Paige Collings with the Dragons trailing 9-7.
Taylor surrendered another solo home run in the sixth inning before being relieved by Shyann Beach who recorded the final two outs to get out of the inning.
Drexel got two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but with runners on first and second Campbell grounded out to end the game.
