Box Score
Charleston, S.C. - Drexel (2-6) finished play at the College of Charleston Cougar Classic with a tough 5-2 loss to Iowa State (9-5) in a game that began on Saturday night and finished on Sunday morning due to unplayably foggy conditions in the final inning.
The Dragons took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning but gave up five runs over the next three frames to drop their second game of the tournament.
Hillary Allen started and incurred the loss after letting up three earned runs on six hits and three walks through four and a third innings.
Tori Torrescano picked up the win for the Cyclones in relief. She allowed just one hit and three walks in six innings and struck out seven without allowing a run.
Jenn Reading brought home Laura Stagliano, who reached on a triple, with a sacrifice fly to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Reading herself came around to score in the third inning when she reached on an error by the right fielder and scampered all the way to third on the miscue. Paige Collings brought her home with a sacrifice fly to center field.
Heidi Kidwell drew the score to 2-1 with an RBI single that brought home pinch runner Amandine Habben.
The Cyclones broke the game open in the fifth inning by scoring three runs on four hits and an error. Three of the first four runners reached in the inning, knocking Allen out of the game in favor of Shelby Taylor. The rookie allowed a two-RBI double by Carley Berry before escaping the inning on a run-down play at third base.
One more run crossed the plate for Iowa State in the sixth inning, pushed home by groundout by Dalyn Varela to give the Cyclones the final margin.
Game play was suspended in the sixth inning due to foggy conditions. When play resumed on Sunday morning, Torrescano finished off the Dragons by striking out two of three batters, with Campbell -the only Dragon to make contact in the frame- fouling out to third base.
The Dragons return to action next weekend when they take on the field at the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.
