Lawrenceville, N.J. – Two of collegiate wrestling's greats square off Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Rider's Alumni Gymnasium. The Broncs' Gary Taylor and the Dragons' Jack Childs bring 67 years of combined coaching experience, 789 total Div. I wins and countless coaching accolades to the mat as they face each other for the last time in their 32-year history. Childs announced earlier this season that the 2010-11 will be his last as head coach of Drexel's wrestling program, which he has guided for 35 years.
Childs, in the penultimate dual match of his career, brings with him a Drexel wrestling team poised for action. Sophomore Joe Booth entered the national spotlight with a No. 17 ranking in the wrestling community's WIN Magazine at 165 pounds with two wins over the weekend. Booth, third in the CAA at 165, is preparing to face Rider's Jim Resnick, currently second in the conference, in what is sure to be one of the highlight bouts of the night.
At 125 pounds, senior Michael Gomez, fourth in the CAA, will likely meet Rider's Chuck Zeisloft, third in the CAA with an unblemished conference record at 2-0. Drexel's Frank Cimato, 2-3 in the CAA, will square-off against Jim Kirchner of Rider, who sits in third at 133 pounds. The 141-pound bout will see Drexel's Josh Yurasits, with a 2-2 conference record, meet Rider's Aaron Nestor, also with a third place standing at 1-2.
At 149 and 157 pounds, Drexel's true-freshman Austin Sommer and sophomore Charles Aungst will also be taking on top competition in the conference with respective matches against Rider's second place Zac Cibula and third ranked Ramon Santiago. At 174 pounds, senior Justin Wieller will be looking to prove himself against No. 2 in the conference, Rob Morrison who boasts a perfect 3-0 CAA record for the Broncs', while Drexel's Shawn Fausey takes on Rider's James Brundage at 184 pounds.
With the heavies up to the mat, Drexel will send two-time CAA Rookie of the Week Brandon Palik with a third ranked standing at 197 in the conference after compiling a 3-2 CAA record, 13-7 dual meet record and 16-10 overall mark, up against Rider's Joe Ferber. Palik also leads the Dragons with five pins this season. Current CAA Co-Wrestler of the Week Jack Callender, ranked third in the conference at heavy weight, will meet Rider's Evan Craig, 2-1 CAA and 9-15 overall, in the center circle.
