Box Score
Baltimore, Md. - Drexel's run at the UMBC Dawg Pound Classic ended with a loss to the host on Sunday. After defeating the Retrievers on Saturday, the Dragons (6-9) couldn't come up with a rally after giving up five runs in the fifth inning of a 5-3 loss. Shelby Taylor took the loss for Dexel, but did her best to help out her cause by hitting her first career home run and driving in two of the team's three runs.
Katie Ferguson pitched UMBC to victory with a complete-game effort. She struck out six batters while scattering four hits and three walks and giving up three earned runs. Taylor lasted four and two-thirds, giving up five earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out just one batter.
Taylor put Drexel on top with a shot to left field with Katy Harrington on base. The 2-0 lead lasted through four innings, but in the bottom of the fifth a two-RBI double by Lynn Pronobis erased the advantage and sent the Retrievers on the track to a five-run inning. Taylor got two outs in the inning with the score tied 2-2, but RBI singles by Julia Culotta and Lauren O'Malley bounced her from the game in favor of Shyann Beach. Beach allowed an RBI single to Jessica Warner before escaping the inning with the Dragons trailing 5-2.
The Dragons looked to rally in the sixth inning when Jenn Reading led off the frame with a single through the left side. Pinch runner Hanna Parrish stole second and came in to score on single by Paige Collings. The rally stalled, however, when Harrington struck out looking, Devon Metcalf flew out and Beach went down swinging to end the inning.
Comfort Ahonkhai, Amanda Bachmann and Hillary Allen went down in order to end the game in the top of the seventh.
For their efforts on the weekend, Katy Harrington and Hillary Allen were recognized with All-Tournament Team honors.
The Dragons return to the field on March 22 when they travel to the nation's capital to play a doubleheader against Georgetown.
