Box Score
Fairfax, Va. - Drexel fell victim to a bout of shoddy fielding in what otherwise amounted to closely contested series opener at George Mason (13-22, 3-9). The Patriots would come from behind for a 6-2 win over the Dragons (12-23, 4-9). Tiffany Webb had three hits and an RBI for the Patriots, while Rachel Campbell went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Dragons. The second game of Friday's doubleheader was postponed to Saturday due to rain. The twinbill is presently slated for a noon start.
Allen took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs through six innings. She let up six hits and three walks and fanned two Patriots.
Kelcey Byrd pitched her way around seven Drexel hits and a walk through seven innings while allowing just two earned runs. She also struck out three batters in the complete-game victory.
Drexel took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with and RBI single by Rachel Campbell that scored lead-off hitter Hanna Parrish.
The Patriots evened the score at a run apiece in the bottom of the frame on an RBI hit by Emily Lafferty.
A fielder's choice groundout by Hillary Allen brought home Laura Stagliano in the fifth inning to put the Dragons on top 2-1. Stagliano reached on an infield single to the right side and stole second base.
Mason pulled ahead in the bottom of the fifth, however, when Allen struggled with her control. The first three Patriots of the inning reached on hits, with a single by Lauren Webb bringing home Katie Rynex to tie the game. The next two batters were hit by pitches, which pushed home another run to give Mason a 3-2 lead. Allen settled down after the second plunking to strikeout Kaila Conlon swinging and get Rachel Davies to end the inning with a pop fly to shortstop.
A pair of fielding errors by Parrish in right field allowed the Patriots to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and take a 6-2 lead. With runners on first and third a ball hit to Parrish got passed her, allowing both runners to score and Megan Blank to get all the way to third base. The next batter, Tori Dudley also reached on a miscue by Parrish, which allowed Blank to score. Lafferty fouled out to end the inning.
