Philadelphia - Looking to build on a three-game sweep of UNC Wilmington last weekend that put it back in the CAA hunt, the Drexel softball team will travel to Fairfax, Va. to open a three-game set with George Mason (12-22, 2-9) this weekend. The Dragons (12-22) are 4-8 in the CAA, sitting two games behind James Madison for fourth place in the standings. Opening pitch for Friday's twinbill has been moved up to 10:00 a.m. due to impending inclement weather. Saturday's series finale is set for a noon start. Live audio will be available for all three games by clicking here.
Drexel lost a tight mid-week game to Penn 6-4 in extra innings on Wednesday. But the Dragons showed every sign of being a team on the rise in the contest. Four different players had multi-hit games, the Drexel outfield turned in a number of superlative defensive plays and the team saw a strong relief pitching performance from sophomore Shyann Beach. Rachel Campbell continues to swing a hot bat for the Dragons. The senior hit .385 last week and led the team with five runs scored. The return of sophomore lead-off hitter Hanna Parrish to the lineup, gives the Dragons one of the speediest 9-1-2 batting order cominations in the CAA. Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week Hillary Allen has won her last two conference starts and will look to continue her recent success from the circle.
The Patriots are coming off a week filled with rain outs. Their weekend series with Towson was cut to just two games, where they lost both, and Wednesday's games at Mount Saint Mary's were also cancelled due to field conditions because of the rain.
Big Bats: While the Patriots do not have a player batting better than .270 on the season they have been able to generate runs via a number of different sources. Rachael Davies is the team's leading run producer with 19 RBIs despite a .222 batting average. Katie Rynex is a power source with three home runs and 15 RBIs. And when they get on base, Megan Blank and Tori Dudley are both threats to steal a base.
Ace of the Staff: Miranda Cranford is the veteran of the staff, but rookies Kelcey Bryd and Stephanie Maher have stepped to the forefront as two up-and-coming pitchers in the CAA this season. Maher is 6-3, appearing mostly in relief this season, and boasts a team-best 3.16 ERA in 57 innings of work. Byrd has been coming on of late, turning in a strong complete-game effort against Towson last weekend. She leads the team with 91 innings pitched and has thrown three shutouts already this season.
All-Time Series: Drexel holds a slight 15-14 edge in the all-time series with George Mason. The Dragons have won seven of their last nine games against the Patriots dating back to 2008, including taking two of three last season and sweeping George Mason in 2009.
