Box Score
Towson, Md. – A big fifth inning punctuated by a grand slam home run off the bat of Andrea Stevenson proved to be too much for Drexel (8-15, 1-5 CAA) to overcome in a 7-0 loss at Towson (14-16, 3-3 CAA) in the final game of the teams' three-game series.
Hillary Allen took the loss for the Dragons after allowing 14 baserunners, nine via hits and five on bases on balls. She was touched up for six earned runs in five innings before giving way to Shelby Taylor. Taylor pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts.
Dominque Ortega shut out the Dragons for the second day in a row. Pitching to contact, Ortega did not walk a batter and allowed just four hits in the complete-game effort while striking out one batter.
Rachel Campbell led off the game with a double to right field and moved to third on a bunt by Laura Stagliano. The sacrifice was to no avail, however, as Jenn Reading lined out and Paige Collings grounded out to end the inning.
Reading, Allen and Devon Metcalf were the only other Dragons to reach base in the game, but none of them made it past first base.
Faulty fielding cost the Dragons a run in the first inning. With runners on first and third, a groundball off the bat of Sammi DiPompo was misplayed by Metcalf, allowing a the Tigers to take a 1-0 lead.
Rachel Miller gave the Tigers another run in the fourth inning with an RBI single. But the back-breaker came when Towson put five on the board in the fifth inning. Miller opened scoring in that inning as well, with another run-scoring hit. Stevenson finished it off with a two-out grand slam, which was also her fourth hit of the day.
The Dragons are on the road this Wednesday for a doubleheader at Iona before returning to Drexel Field for a three-game set against Georgia State.
