New Rochelle, N.Y. - For a second straight game a seventh-inning rally fell just short for the Dragons (8-17) as Iona (10-12) completed a doubleheader sweep with a 7-6 victory. Drexel scored three runs in its last turn at the plate but it was not enough to overcome a 7-3 deficit going into the frame.
Rachel Campbell went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs. Comfort Ahonkahi also had two hits in the game and scored twice.
Rookie Shelby Taylor took the loss after allowing seven earned runs on 11 hits and a walk in seven innings of work while striking out five Gaels.
Alyssa Maiese, who earned the pitching win in the opener, went 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run homer, while driving in four of the Gaels' seven runs. Erin Kyle had a 3-for-3 game and Eileen McCann went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Sarah Jackson earned the win in relief of starter Deanna Algeo. She threw the final four innings, allowed three runs on three hits and three walks and struck out eight batters.
Trailing 7-3 in the ninth, Drexel scored runs on a bunt single by Comfort Ahonkhai, and RBI ground out by Campbell and a single by Stagliano. Stagliano represented the tying run on first base with one out. But Jenn Reading flew out and, after Stagliano stole second, Paige Collings struck out to end the game.
The Dragons return to Drexel Field this weekend to host the Georgia State Panthers in a three-game CAA series.
