GAME ONE
GAME TWO
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Despite an outstanding offensive performance by senior shortstop Devon Metcalf, the Drexel softball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday, as they fell in both ends of a doubleheader at first-place Hofstra, 8-1 and 12-5. Metcalf went 5-for-8 on the day, including a solo home run in the first game and a 4-for-4 output with two runs batted in during the second.
Hillary Allen took the loss in Game One for the Dragons, while Shelby Taylor was tagged with the decision in the second game. Drexel is now 13-15 on the year and 1-4 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
The Dragons grabbed a 1-0 lead early in the first game off Hofstra's star pitcher, Olivia Galati. With one out and no one on, Metcalf connected and drove the ball deep out to left field, up and away for her second home run of the season.
Galati settled down from there, allowing just one more hit for the Dragons the rest of the way, a single by Sylvia Llamas. The Pride, meanwhile, scored twice in the second inning to gain the lead, adding a run in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth off the senior starter for Drexel.
The Dragons once again went up 1-0 early in the second game. Again, it was Metcalf who got things started off Hofstra's Erin Wade. With one out, Metcalf lined a single back through the middle, the first of four hits for her in the game. After Paige Collings walked, Jenn Reading laced a base hit back through the middle, sending Metcalf around to score. Facing runners on first and second with one out and a run already in, Wade was able to induce back-to-back pop ups to escape further damage.
Hofstra evened the score in the bottom of the first, then scored two in the third and four in the fourth to grab a 7-1 lead. In the fifth inning, the Dragons crept back into the game with three runs. Comfort Ahonkhai got the inning started with a bunt single down the third base line. She moved up to second when Hofstra's third baseman threw the ball away trying to gun down Ahonkhai at first. After Hanna Parrish moved Ahonkhai up a bag with a productive groundout, Metcalf chopped a roller in front of the plate. The speedy Ahonkhai slid home with the Dragons' second run as Metcalf reached safely with an infield hit.
Paige Collings then smoked a line drive to the wall in right-center field, pulling into second with a double as Metcalf came all the way around to score. After Jenn Reading flew out just on the foul side of the line in deep right field, moving Collings to third, Maddison Timoteo lofted what should have been the third out to center field, but the ball was misplayed by the Pride's center fielder and it fell in. Collings scored, and Timoteo was safe at first.
Drexel was back within range at 7-4, but Hofstra added four runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead back to 11-4. In the sixth, Metcalf drove in her second run of the game when her double to left plated Shelby Taylor and gave Drexel runners on second and third, as Caprice DeMirjian had singled two batters earlier. Collings flew out to end the inning and the threat, however.
The Dragons will return to action on Thursday, when they welcome Lafayette in to the Drexel Softball Field for a single game. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
