Box Score
Philadelphia – Drexel struck early and often in their 9-4 win over Patriot League foe Lafayette. Shelby Taylor pitched all seven allowing only four runs on eight hits as Lafayette errors made up three runs in the spread. The Leopards had five errors to the Dragons one, while the bats were on for both teams as they combined for 15 hits.
Drexel moved to 14-15 overall, while Lafayette dropped to 5-18 on the season. Devon Metcalf knocked in three off of two hits for the Dragons, while teammate Paige Collings added two more. Drexel used seven stolen bases to boost the offense and help drive in runs including three back-to-back-to-back in the first inning. With the win, Drexel improves to 4-3 at home.
The Dragons did a good job cleaning up as only three runners were stranded compared to Lafayette's seven left on base. After leaving four runners stranded in the first two innings and allowing four runs in the first, Lafayette cut the lead in half with one swing of the bat as catcher Stacey Dorn knocked one out of left field scoring two runs. Unshaken, Taylor got Carley Feiro to pop out and Alex Camponara to strike out looking to end the inning.
Drexel's offense responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Comfort Ahonkhia scored her first of two, while Metcalf scored for the second time. The Leopards would not go quietly however, as they pulled to within three at 7-4 when Gwen Turner and Jordan Parsons singled and doubled respectively. Both came around on a put out at first at the next at bat followed by a fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the fifth, pitcher Melissa Robinson went one-two-three picking up her third and final strikeout for the Leopards but their offense couldn't generate anymore as Taylor also face just three batters in the top of the sixth. Drexel tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth then allowed only one more hit in the seventh before picking up three straight outs to end the game.
Taylor faced 32 batters, struck out five and allowed only four earned runs in her seventh win of the season, while Robinson met 30, struck out three and allowed six earned runs on seven hits.
Drexel will be back in action on Friday, April 6 as the Dragons welcome CAA rival Towson for a 1:00 p.m. double header.
