Philadelphia – Drexel took two off of Towson in Saturday's twinbill including a 4-3 walk off win in game two. Drexel, 16-15 overall and 3-4 CAA, took the lead early in both games and kept the pressure up combining for 11 hits to Towson's nine. Hillary Allen and Shelby Taylor both went seven innings to earn the wins with offensive support from Hanna Parrish, Sylvia Llamas and Caprice DiMirjian who added four RBI's.
In the second inning of game one, Allen took first on a walk and Llamas homered on the ensuing at bat to give the Dragons an early lead, which they would not relinquish. It was Llama's first home run of the season and her collegiate career. In the bottom of the inning, Towson cut the lead to one on an illegal pitch that advanced the runners and scored Delanie Dunham from third. The Dragons' stiff defense allowed the narrowest of margins to stand as Allen struck out six of the next seven batters.
It looked as if the Dragons were going to add some insurance when Jenn Reading doubled to left field, but Katie Langmai struck out Maddison Timoteo to get the Tigers out of the jam. Again, the Drexel defense came up with three outs to end the game.
In game two, the Dragons got on the board first again when Timoteo and Llamas both singled followed by a Tiger error that allowed both to score on a long single from DiMirjian to right field. Reading added another double in the bottom of the fourth as Maggie Fermo was caught in a run down between second and third giving Towson just one out with a runner in scoring position for Drexel. The Dragons were unable to convert as the Tiger's picked up two quick outs to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Taylor walked the first batter she faced and then gave up a home run to Haley Stueckler, which tied things up at two apiece. Drexel's defense had a big inning with three straight outs to swing the momentum. The Dragon's stepped to the plate and kept the bats swinging as DiMirjian singled to center and stole second to help set up a SAC fly from Parrish to give Drexel control once more.
Towson didn't back down as Stueckler picked up a long solo shot over the right field fence that put the Tigers right back in it with two outs. Taylor got Jillian Donnelly to ground out back to the pitcher to retire the side and set up Drexel's walk off win. An error from Towson and a SAC bunt from Comfort Ahonkhai put DiMirjian in scoring position. In the next at bat, Parrish knocked one into the infield and another error by the Tigers allowed DiMirjian to score ending the game.
Allen faced 36, struck out seven and allowed only one run on five hits moving to 8-7 on the season. Taylor followed up by striking out four of 26, walking only one and allowing just four hits to record the win for a 9-7 record.
Drexel and Towson will finish out their three-game series on Sunday, April 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Drexel Field at the Vidas Athletic Complex located on 42nd and Powelton streets.
