GAME ONE BOX SCORE
GAME TWO BOX SCORE
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team snapped a six-game losing streak on Saturday, as it won the second game of a doubleheader with UNCW, 3-1. That came after the visiting Seahawks claimed the first game by a 4-2 count. Maddison Timoteo hit a long home run to straightaway center field to provide the eventual game-winning run in the second game. Amanda Bachmann also homered for Drexel in the first game, her first of the season.
Drexel took an early lead in the first game. Hanna Parrish led off the bottom of the first by slapping a single through the drawn in left side of the infield. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Devon Metcalf, Parrish stole third, then scored two batters later when Jenn Reading smoked a long single off the wall in center field.
The Seahawks went ahead, 3-1, in the fourth inning when Stacey Pinno sent a three-run home run soaring over the fence in left. They tacked on an unearned run in the fifth when Laura Sykes doubled and scored on an error with two outs.
Drexel crept back within two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Bachmann blasted her first home run. The drive was hit to the deepest part of the ballpark, getting out to cut the deficit to 4-2. That would be all Drexel could muster, however, as they got just one more hit the rest of the way.
Hillary Allen went the distance in the first game, taking the loss despite a strong effort with just three earned runs and four hits allowed. She struck out two.
In the second game, it was the Seahawks who got on the board first. On Shelby Taylor's first pitch of the game, Kelsey Eddinger slammed a home run to left field.
That would be one of the few bad pitches of the game for Taylor, who shut UNCW down after that. She scattered only three more hits the rest of the way, and struck out a career-high 12. She earned her tenth win of the season with the victory.
Drexel tied things up in the bottom of the first. Again, it was Parrish acting as the catalyst. She lined a single back up the middle, taking second when Metcalf grounded out. From there, Parrish took advantage of the shaky early action from Seahawk battery Casey Rowland and Ashley Shingleton. Rowland threw two wild pitches in the inning, and Shingleton was charged with a passed ball that ultimately allowed Parrish to sprint home from third base with the tying run.
The game remained knotted at one as both pitchers kept the opposing lineups in check until the bottom of the fourth. Then, with two outs, Maddison Timoteo connected with a Rowland pitch and drove it a long way, up and out to nearly straightaway center field to put Drexel up, 2-1.
The Dragons added an insurance run in the fifth. With one out, Caprice DeMirjian walked. A batter later, Parrish bounded a single through the right side, which was misplayed by the Seahawks' right fielder, letting it roll all the way to the wall. DeMirjian raced around to score, and Parrish wound up at third base. The Dragons could not bring her home, however, and DeMirjian's run was unearned.
The Dragons and Seahawks will conclude their three-game series with the rubber game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. at the Drexel Softball Field.
