Drexel Women's Lacrosse Defeats Old Dominion, 10-4, on Senior Day

Philadelphia – The Drexel women's lacrosse team defeated Old Dominion, 10-4, at Vidas Field on Senior Day. Drexel outshot the Lady Monarchs, 29-19, and won 11 draw controls to Old Dominion's five. Despite the heavy rain, Lindsey Kovar shined on senior day leading the attack with three goals and went 1-1 in free position attempts. Together, the Dragons finished the regular season 11-5 overall and 4-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Drexel went 2-0 this weekend and secured a spot in the 2012 CAA Championships.
Senior Charlotte Wood and junior Alyse Maiden scored a pair of goals for the Dragons. Senior Jaclyn Klunder and junior Kelli Joran both added a goal and an assist. Teammate Kelly Palace tallied her fourth goal of the season. Junior midfielder Kristin Kopenhaver led the team with four draw control wins.
In the opening minutes of the game, Lindsey Kovar caused a turnover during Old Dominion's clear attempt and sprinted down the field after picking up the loose ball. Kovar entered the Lady Monarch's attacking end and shot the ball past Old Dominion's Sarah Geary to give Drexel a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Kovar entered the eight and shot the ball into the top left of the cage from Kelli Joran's pass. The Dragons went on to score two more goals from Charlotte Wood and Kelli Joran extending the lead to four, 4-0.
With 16:69 remaining in the first half, Old Dominion's Rebecca Hartrum scored a free position goal in her second attempt. Both teams went back and forth, but were unable to finish. At 8:39, Alyse Maiden beat three defenders through the middle and scored off a one on one situation with the goalkeeper. At 1:50, Hartrum scored a free position goal. The Dragons led by three, 5-2, at halftime.
The Dragons came out firing in the second half and scored three straight goals. At 18:38, Old Dominion's Rebecca Hartrum scored her third goal and closed the gap to five, 8-3. The Dragons knocked in two more goals from Kelly Palace and Charlotte Wood. Drexel controlled the momentum and maintained the lead until the game clock expired.
Defensively, senior Emily Kane and junior Kelli Joran led the team with two caused turnovers. Kane also had three ground balls. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Santandrea made five stops for the Dragons. She now has 82 saves on the season.
Sunday's game marked the final home contest for seniors Ali Allen, Sam Berger, Catalina Friscia, Morgan Holbrook, Joanna Johnson, Emily Kane, Jaclyn Klunder, Lindsey Kovar, Julia Lanzetta and Charlotte Wood. The Dragons will play in the semifinals at the 2012 CAA Championship on Friday, April 27 hosted by Towson. This marks the Dragons' second consecutive appearance in post-season play.
