Former Rower Stephen Kasprzyk Qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games

Lucerne, Switzerland – Drexel University rowing alumnus Stephen Kasprzyk and his United States men's eight boat defeated New Zealand and France at the 2012 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta on Tuesday afternoon and earned a spot in the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London. The women's double sculls and lightweight men's four also posted first place in the finals at the Rotsee race course in Lucerne, Switzerland.
In the semi-finals on Sunday, the U.S. men's eight gained speed at the 500-meter mark and extended the lead throughout the remainder of the course finishing eight seconds ahead of New Zealand and over 17 seconds ahead of France. The men's eight earned the top seed entering the finals. On Tuesday, the boat crossed the finish line four seconds before New Zealand to secure a spot in the Olympics.
The victorious men's eight boat featured coxswain Zach Vlahos (Piedmont, Calif.), stroke Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.), David Banks (Potomac, Md.), Drexel standout Kasprzyk (Cinnaminson, N.J.), Jake Cornelius (Brooktondale, N.Y.), Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.), Ross James (DeKalb, Ill.), Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.).
While at Drexel University, Kasprzyk helped the men's freshman eight qualify at the 2001 IRA National Championships. The following season, Kasprzyk rowed in the men's varsity eight boat that placed fifth in the finals at the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta.
The 2012 Olympic Games will take place from Friday, July 27 through August 12 in London. On July 28, the men's eight will race in the preliminary heat estimated to begin at 10:10 a.m. BST followed by the repechage on July 30. On August 1, the 'B' finals are estimated to start at 10:30 a.m. BST and the 'A' finals at 12:30 p.m. BST.
