Box Score
The Drexel women's soccer team waited out a lightning delay for almost two hours before falling to Longwood, 2-0, in Farmville, Va., on Friday night. It was the season-opener for both teams.
Longwood opened the scoring midway through the second half. Samantha Phillips took a pass in the box from Kelsey Pardue and went up high to the left, beating Drexel's Eve Badana to put the Lancers up by a goal in the 61st minute. Civanni Moss got the Dragons first shot on goal of the young season in the 70th minute, but her shot was saved by Kyra Byron. Just seven minutes later, the Lancers got an insurance goal when Kylie Dyer tallied in the 77th minute. Longwood had a corner kick, and off the loose ball in the box, Dyer shot the ball into the right corner to make it 2-0.
The teams played a defensive first half and combined on only five shots in the early going. The Lancers had three shots, including two that were saved by Badana. The Dragons could muster only two shots in the first 45 minutes, one by Sam Greenfield and the other by Alex Vasquez. Both attempts missed the net.
The Lancers outshot Drexel, 10-5 in the game. Badana made three saves in the loss, while Byron had two in earning the shutout.
Drexel will conclude its two-game trip to Virginia on Sunday afternoon with a match at Liberty. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
