Men's Soccer Blanked By Temple, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team dropped its second straight game on Saturday afternoon as it fell to crosstown rival Temple at Vidas Field, 2-0. Drexel was shut out for the first time since its season opener as Temple's Willie Chalfant and Vaughn Spurrier notched unassisted goals to lead the Owls.
Drexel (5-4-1) lost for the third time in seven home games thus far this season. The Dragons outshot Temple 18-17, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The Dragons fell behind early for a third-straight game as the Owls scored in the 21st minute. Jared Martinelli, the leading scorer in the city, fired a rocket on goal from the left of Drexel goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach. The freshman keeper was able to keep the ball out of the net, but could not control the rebound as Chalfant took in the rebound and fired from 10 yards out to put the Owls on the board.
As the first half progressed, Drexel got a few looks, including an outstanding shot off the toe of sophomore Joaquin del Rosario. He came from Temple goalkeeper Dan Scheck's right and sent a ball in that looked like it would sail right over Scheck's head and into the top of the net. However, the Temple keeper leapt and got his fingertips on the ball, deflecting it over the crossbar and out of bounds.
Temple got its second goal in the 63rd minute when Vaughn Spurrier, the Owls' senior forward, gained control and dribbled upfield along the left sideline. He deked his way around two Drexel defenders, then fired to the far post, just past Afflerbach's outstretched arms.
Although the game featured two Philadelphia Soccer Six teams, it was not an official league match. Both Temple and Drexel finished their league season with 1-1-0 records.
The Dragons will hit the road next, leaving the state of Pennsylvania for the first time since September 1. Like that trip to Seton Hall, though, they won't be going far as the Dragons visit Princeton on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
