PHILADELPHIA - Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Afflerbach, who helped lead the Dragons back to the top of the Colonial Athletic Association, was named a Co-Rookie of the Week by both the CAA and the Philadelphia Soccer Six on Monday. Afflerbach notched his eighth victory of the year on Wednesday as he helped Drexel get a 2-1 road win at the College of Charleston, clinching the CAA title.
Afflerbach, who has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week twice now, had four saves in the win on Wednesday, keeping the Cougars off the board for the first 87 minutes. He also broke up a corner kick in the 90th minute which could have tied the game for Charleston.
Afflerbach's share of the Philadelphia Soccer Six Rookie of the Week award is his fourth such honor this season.
The Harleysville native shares the CAA Rookie of the Week award with freshman goalkeeper Mac Phillips of William & Mary, and splits the Philadelphia award with freshman forward Sam Hayward of Penn.
Afflerbach and the Dragons will host the CAA Tournament starting on Thursday evening when the top-seeded Dragons go up against No. 4 Delaware in the semifinals at 7:00 p.m. at Vidas Field. That game will be preceded by No. 2 UNCW and No. 3 William & Mary at 4:00 p.m. The championship game will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Vidas Field.
