Women's Lacrosse Tops George Washington, 10-3, in Season Opener

Washington, D.C. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a dominating 10-3 win at George Washington on Saturday. The Dragons went on to score five unanswered goals in the final 11 minutes of play to rally past the Colonials. Drexel outshot George Washington, 29-19, and won 12 draw controls to the Colonials' three.

With just seven minutes off the clock, Jessica Rudloff scored an unassisted goal to give the Dragons an early lead. Rudloff's goal marked her first point as a Dragon after coming to the squad from Longwood. At 18:27 in the first, George Washington's Jordy Bathras tied the game, before Drexel's Alissa Watts and Kelli Joran extended the lead to two, 3-1. With 46 seconds remaining until halftime, the Colonials' Nicole Lacey tallied an unassisted goal. Drexel's Alyse Maiden answered back in the following possession. After 30 minutes of play, the Dragons led by two goals, 4-2.

The Dragons kept the momentum high throughout the second half. In the opening minutes of the half, Kelli Joran scored a goal with an assist by Alyse Maiden giving Drexel a 5-2 lead. At 23:14, George Washington's Allie Rash connected with teammate Jamie Bumgardner bringing the game back within two goals. Drexel secured the win after a five-goal rally in the final minutes of the game.

Senior Alyse Maiden led the attack with three goals and two assists for five total points. Maiden is now tied for seventh on Drexel's all-time assist leaderboard with 39 career assists. Fellow senior Kelli Joran also posted three goals and assist in the win. Sophomore Alissa Watts and senior Kristen Kopenhaver also put points on the board for Drexel.

Defensively, Kopenhaver posted a team-high with two caused turnovers. Caroline Dodds made her first collegiate start for Drexel and tallied two ground balls. Jocelyn Quaile, Kaitlin Harris, and Kopenhaver each picked up a pair of ground balls against the Colonials.

Sophomore goalkeeper Teresha Bradley made her first career start between the pipes for the Dragons. She recorded six stops for a new season-high. Drexel's Amanda Santandrea finished in the cage and made a save in the final minutes of play.

The Dragons will host La Salle on Wednesday, February 20 at 4:00 p.m. on their home turf at Vidas Field.
