Softball Swept in Doubleheader at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Drexel softball team is still looking for its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season, as it fell twice at James Madison on Friday, 8-0 and 11-1. The Dragons (10-20, 0-5) were playing their first road conference games of the season. Drexel managed just six hits on the afternoon, five of which came in the Game Two defeat.

Tara Konopka (6-9) took the loss in the first game for the Dragons. Rose Portiolli (1-3) saddled the defeat in Game Two.

James Madison put the Dragons away quickly in the first game, scoring three times in the first inning and two more in the third. Konopka settled down to retire the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings, her last two innings of work, but it was too late as Drexel managed just one hit, a bunt single by Comfort Ahonkhai in the third inning.

The script went much the same in Game Two, as James Madison raced out for three runs in the first, three more in the third and five in the sixth inning. Jailyn Ford capped the Dukes' day with a grand slam in the sixth inning that put them up by 10 runs, prompting the eight-run rule to come into play.

Drexel had scored its lone run of the day in the top of the sixth, an unearned run plated by Ahonkhai when the Dukes misplayed a grounder hit by Drexel catcher Karli Boyer. The Dragons threatened to get back into what was then a 6-1 game as they got four more runners on base after Ahonkhai, but Boyer was gunned down at the plate and the bases were left loaded as the inning ended.

The Dragons and Dukes will finish their three-game series on Saturday with a single game set for noon.
