Errors Doom Drexel Softball in 3-2 Loss to Penn

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team got its second-straight strong pitching performance, but fell to the Penn Quakers on Wednesday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field, 3-2. Tara Konopka went the distance for Drexel and did not allow an earned run, but three Drexel errors including one of her own allowed the Quakers to take advantage.
Ellen Scott drove in both Drexel runs as the Dragons fell to 12-29 on the season. Konopka fell to 6-15, while Alexis Borden got the win in relief for Penn (21-15) to improve to 11-7. Lindsay Mann got her first save.
All three of Penn's runs were of the unearned variety. In the first inning, Sydney Turchin led off with a triple slashed to right-center field. The next batter, Steph Caso, hit a comebacker to Konopka that froze Turchin at third. However, Konopka threw wide to first base, and the ball went to the fence. Caso moved to second as Turchin scored. The next batter also hit a comebacker and Konopka struck out the following hitter, making Turchin's run unearned.
In the second, Penn added two more. Again, both were unearned, this time thanks to an error by first baseman Jenn Reading, who dropped a throw from third baseman Jill Popek. That extended the inning long enough for a two-RBI single off the bat of Turchin, putting the Quakers up 3-0.
Drexel answered right back in the bottom of the second. Maddison Timoteo was hit by a pitch to lead off. With one out, Reading and Popek hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Next was Ellen Scott, who roped a double to deep left-center field that brought home both Timoteo and Reading.
With both teams finding their hitting strokes to get the game started, the pitching took over in the third. Although both sides had chances after that, including a seventh inning rally for the Dragons that forced Penn to make a game-ending play at the plate, neither was able to push a run across as four Penn pitchers helped hold the Dragons at bay.
Drexel will return to the field this weekend for its final home CAA series of the season when it hosts Georgia State for a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. The Dragons will honor their four seniors before Sunday's game.
