PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team dropped the first two games of its three-game series with Georgia State on Saturday, falling 7-6 in the first game of a doubleheader before losing 9-0 in six innings in Game Two. Maddison Timoteo hit a two-run home run in the first game, but the Dragons could not get over the hump after losing an early 4-2 lead.
Tara Konopka and Shelby Taylor were the losing pitchers for Drexel. Eron Milton and Katie Worley earned the victories for Georgia State.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of Game One, the Dragons rattled off four singles and worked two walks in the second inning, scoring four times to take a 4-2 lead. Karli Boyer singled with one out, followed by walks by Jenn Reading and Jess O'Hara. Jill Popek then lined a base hit back up the middle to plate Boyer. With Taylor pinch hitting for Game One starter Konopka, Taylor poked a grounder through the left side, sending Reading home with the tying run. Hanna Parrish was next, lining a base hit that scored both O'Hara and Popek.
Georgia State countered in the fifth inning, scoring three runs, two of which were earned. The Panthers added single runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 7-4 lead heading to the bottom of the seventh.
In that bottom of the seventh inning, Sylvia Llamas led off with a walk. Up stepped Timoteo, who crushed a long home run down the line in left field to pull Drexel back within a run at 7-6. Unfortunately, the Panthers' Kaitlyn Medlam was able to work around that, closing the door and giving Georgia State the victory.
In the second game, the Panthers once again got off to a quick start with three runs in the first. This time, they added three more in the second and held Drexel down, keeping the Dragons hitless until there were two outs in the sixth inning. With the Panthers having added three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-0 lead, Drexel was down to its last out when Ellen Scott hit a grounder to the hole between short and third. Although the Panthers were able to keep it on the infield, Scott beat the throw for Drexel's first hit. Worley, who had also started Game One, shut the door after that with a fly out to complete the shutout.
Drexel and Georgia State will complete their series on Sunday, when they play a single game at 11:00 a.m. Senior Day for the Dragons will precede the game, so fans are encouraged to arrive early to honor seniors Amanda Bachmann, Shyann Beach, Hanna Parrish and Jenn Reading.
