Softball Falls to Georgia State, 9-0

PHILADELPHIA - Five unearned runs helped Georgia State put away Drexel softball on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Dragons 9-0 in five innings. Drexel held the potent Georgia State offense at bay until the fourth, when the Panthers pushed across a run. They plated three more in the fifth before a pair of two-out errors allowed them to score five more, spoiling senior day for Drexel's Class of 2013.
Shelby Taylor took the loss, allowing one run in two innings of work in relief. Senior Shyann Beach got the start and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Kaitlyn Medlam got the win for Georgia State, holding Drexel to just an Ellen Scott double.
Beach worked around a leadoff walk in the first inning, grabbing a comeback line drive and doubling up Ashley Christy at first base. In the second, Georgia State got runners on second and third with one out thanks to a single, a walk and a wild pitch, but Beach once again extracated herself from trouble, inducing consecutive rollers to first base to end the inning.
Drexel got its first hit with one out in the third inning when Scott smashed a double that cleared Christy's head in left field and rolled to the wall. She moved to third on a Hanna Parrish sacrifice bunt, but was stranded there.
In the fourth, Georgia State scored when Taylor Anderson lined a double to right-center, plating Callie Alford who had reached on a leadoff walk. The Panthers once again would find themselves with runners on second and third and one out, but could not extend their lead as Taylor struck out Jordan Brown and got a pop out from Whitney Phillips.
In the fifth, however, the Panthers broke out. They did not knock the cover off the ball, taking advantage of five Drexel walks in addition to the two errors later in the inning. Georgia State had just three singles in the inning, but capitalized on Drexel miscues. The Dragons were retired in order in the bottom of the inning, ending the game.
Prior to the contest, Drexel honored four seniors - Amanda Bachmann, Beach, Parrish and Jenn Reading - who were suiting up for their final CAA home game.
Drexel will play one final game at the Drexel Softball Field this season, hosting Delaware State at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
