Luetzow and U.S. Men's Eight Finish Sixth at World University Games

KAZAN, Russia – Rising junior Ian Luetzow was one of nine student-athletes selected by USRowing to compete in the U.S. men's eight at the 2013 World University Games from July 6 through July 8 held in Russia. Luetzow and the men's eight placed sixth overall in the grand final. Russia won gold followed by Ukraine and The Netherlands.
On the opening day of competition, the U.S. stopped the clock at 6:33.81 for fourth place. The men's eight picked up speed at the 1000 meter mark in the repechages and finished fourth with a time of 6:02.5 securing the last spot in the finals. On Monday, Luetzow and the U.S. men's eight crossed the finish line at 6:06.91 for sixth place overall.
Luetzow along with Marist College's Christopher Leonard, George Washington University's Kasey Charles Colander, University of California, Los Angeles' Jeffrey Latham, University of California, Santa Barbara's Luke Wilhelm, University of Wisconsin's James Letten, University of Minnesota's Luke Yehlen, Boston College's Keane Johnson and Universityof Pittsburgh's Zachary Petronic represented the U.S. for this first time.
This past season at Drexel, he earned a silver medal in the men's second varsity eight at the renowned 2013 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. Drexel went on to win its first-ever overall team title and men's points trophy. At the IRA National Championships, Luetzow competed in the varsity four and finished fourth in the third level final. The Louisville, Kentucky native also placed first in the second varsity eight at the Bergen Cup, Kerr Cup and the Knecht Cup.
The World University Games is an international multi-sports event for university athletes, which is organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). There are both Summer and Winter Games, which are held every two years, in odd years. This year was the first time since 1993 in which rowing was included in the World University Games. Rowing has only been included four times total since the beginning of the games in 1923.
