PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team got back into the win column with a 2-1 victory in a shootout over the visiting Richmond Spiders at Buckley Field on Sunday. The win gets the Dragons to 8-6 on the season and loss drops the Spiders to 9-6.
The Dragons won the shootout 2-1 after Jantien Gunter made saves on three of the four shooters for the Spiders and Christina Conrad, Jessica McCarthy and Rachel Sumfest all connected on their attempts.
After a scoreless first half Samantha Ostoich got the Spiders on the board first when she redirected a pass in from Amy Cooke for her second of the season.
Allyson Fuller and McCarthy had shots off corners in the minutes before Idrienne Walker tied the game for the Dragons with her third of the season in the 63rd minute. Walker got an assist from Conrad when Walker took a pass from Conrad at the top of the arc and beat Kelley Wentling to her left.
Fuller had a chance to get the Dragons the lead but Cooke made a stop after Fuller's shot be Wentling. Karleigh Beane had a chance to get the game winner but Wentling saved her shot with 14 seconds to play.
In the two overtime periods the Dragons had six shots but none of them found the back of the net. The Dragon defense held the Spiders to just three shots in the thirty additional minutes. In the second overtime Drexel had a couple of penalty corners but no chances came of them.
In the shootout the Dragons got goals on their second, third and fourth chances to get the win. Gunter recorded six saves in regulation and overtime plus three in the shutout to earn her eighth win of the season.
