PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team defeated Saint Joseph's, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon to improve to 2-0 this season. With the loss, the Hawks move to 1-2 on the year.
Lizzy Carr put up a hat trick for the Dragons, while Kelly Palace and Joelle Hartke added two goes apiece. Amanda Norcini and Emily Duffey each added a goal to round out the scoring effort for Drexel. Goalkeeper Teresha Bradley picked up eleven saves in the victory.
In the first period, both teams remained without a shot until the Hawks' Emily Bowers found the net at the 25:42 mark for her fifth goal of the season and the first of the game.
The Dragons staged a counterattack with a four-shot spree over the course of three minutes led by Norcini. With 22:24 left in the first, Norcini found Palace who put the ball in the net to get Drexel on the board. The Dragons' second goal would come just four minutes later when Palace added another goal, unassisted.
Saint Joseph's answered with 12:53 to go when the Hawks' Michele Granger scored to tie the game up at two.
A few minutes later, Drexel would capitalize on a Saint Joseph's turnover as Duffey set up Hartke to score her first goal of the day and give the Dragons a one goal lead. With 4:29 left in the first, Hartke would execute on another Hawks' turnover to put Drexel ahead 4-2.
The Hawks fought back with a goal from Abby Ananian off a free position shot, which cut the Drexel lead to 4-3 with just under four minutes to play in the first half. However, the Dragons struck again at the 1:45 mark as Carr fired one into the net to give the Dragons back their two-goal lead going into halftime.
The second period saw a total of six goals. After a shot by the Hawks and a ground ball pick up by Bradley, the Dragons cleared the ball down the field and Norcini found the net off a pass from Eva Winiarski. The next Drexel goal would come off of yet another Saint Joseph's turnover as Carr set up Duffey for the team's seventh goal of the match at the 25-minute mark. Just 55 seconds later, Carr would get her second goal of the game off a free position shot to increase the Dragons' lead to 8-3.
Despite the Dragons holding a five goal lead, the Hawks would fight back and put a shot in the net with 20:52 left in the second. The Dragons added their final tally less than three minutes later as Carr would score her third of the day off a pass from Winiarski, the freshman's third assist of the game.
The Dragons return to action on Wednesday, February 26 at 4:00 p.m. when they will host Stony Brook at Vidas Field.
